Better Information, Better Care: VEI Helping Patients Make Informed Decisions

Vision Eye Institute (VEI) has developed a comprehensive suite of clinician-developed resources to support patient education and communication.

The resources – available free on the VEI website  – include detailed condition and treatment pages and an eyeMatters hub featuring fact sheets, articles, videos, frequently asked questions, multilingual brochures, and practical tools like the Amsler grid.

A separate patient hub is also available with guidance on appointment preparation such as what happens at the first appointment, what to bring to the appointment, the effect of dilating eye drops, and other frequently asked questions.

Access to trusted information is critical and should complement the care patients receive from their ophthalmologist, helping them better understand their condition

VEI said feedback from patients and referrers consistently shows that health care works better when the right information is available at the right time.

“We know that well-informed patients feel more confident and more engaged, which may help achieve better outcomes,” said Siobhan Todhunter, VEI Group Marketing Manager.

“Access to trusted information is critical and should complement the care patients receive from their ophthalmologist, helping them better understand their condition, their options and what to expect before and after treatment,” Ms Todhunter said.

Ms Todhunter said VEI continuously reviews feedback to identify, develop. and refine content to meet evolving patient needs and expectations.

“It’s always going to be an iterative process. COVID really accelerated the shift toward digital engagement, and social media and (artificial intelligence) AI technology continue to influence how patients seek and interact with health information.

“However, the underlying desire to help patients take an active role in managing their eye health remains a priority for us.”

Vision Eye Institute is Australia’s largest private provider of ophthalmic services and operator of 11 day surgeries, with a network of more than 100 ophthalmologists across Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, and Queensland.
