At the webinar, moderated by optometrist Dr Amira Howari, Prof Pavesio will explain retinal hypoxia; a key factor in the development of diabetic retinopathy. You’ll find out how, in the process of dark adaptation, the rod photoreceptors become depolarised, consuming significantly more oxygen to support their increased metabolic activity, in doing so exacerbating retinal hypoxia.
Prof Pavesio will speak about his experience using bio photonic treatments, sharing data on its effectiveness and outcomes, and integrating these advanced treatment modalities into clinical practice. You’ll learn about how he assesses patient eligibility for bio photonic therapies and monitors their progress, and how the Noctura 400 non-invasive sleep mask contributes to the effective care of patients with early-stage diabetic retinopathy.

About the Speakers
Carlos Pavesio is Professor of Ocular Inflammation and Infection at University College London and a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He is also Director of the Uveitis Service and Director of the Fellowship Programme at Moorfields Eye Hospital, and Chairman of the Infection Control Committee.
Prof Pavesio has delivered more than 300 lectures in the UK and internationally. He was a Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology in New Zealand in 2009, a Health Manpower Development Plan Visiting Expert in Ophthalmology– Uveitis, Intraocular inflammation, Medical Retina in Singapore in 2014, and a Visiting Professor Chennai, India, in 2018.
Prof Pavesio is the Founding President of the European Society of Ocular Inflammation (EUSOI) and Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection. He has co-edited five books in ophthalmology and has authored more than 30 book chapters. He has over 270 peer-reviewed publications in the field.
Dr Amira Howari is a senior optometrist recognised for her leadership in diabetes and eye health. She works across clinical practice, policy, education and strategic healthcare initiatives to improve outcomes for people living with chronic conditions.
Dr Howari serves as a Diabetes Australia Ambassador, and a Board Director of the Primary Care Diabetes Society of Australia (PCDSA). She is a member of the Diabetes and Endocrine Network at the Agency for Clinical Innovation (NSW Health). Dr Howari regularly presents at national and international conferences and contributes to leading health industry publications. Living with type 1 diabetes for more than 34 years, her unique perspective combines lived experience with over two decades of clinical practice.
