LIPO Smart Eyewear: Data for Myopia Management

It’s a common occurrence: Practitioner prescribes myopia spectacles. Sometime later, child returns for review. Practitioner asks a series of questions: “Have they been wearing their glasses? Are they spending enough time outdoors? How much screen time are they getting? How close do they hold their books?”

Parents answer as best they can. Child shrugs. Somewhere between memory, best guess, and good intentions, the practitioner pieces together a picture of what life has looked like since the last visit.

But what if that ritual – those vague answers – could be replaced by hard data?

That question – how do children really use their eyes and their myopia control spectacles – is behind LIPO Aster 2.0, a new generation of smart eyewear that combines spectacle wear with digital monitoring technology designed to track a child’s visual habits and environment (Figures 1, above, and 2).

Rather than focusing solely on what children see through their lenses, Aster 2.0 is designed to capture information about how they use their eyes throughout the day.

LIPO said the system monitors six behavioural indicators commonly discussed during myopia management consultations: spectacle wear time, ambient light exposure, outdoor activity duration, near working distance, reading posture, and sitting posture (Figure 3).

The information is collected through integrated technology housed within the eyewear and made available through LIPO’s connected digital management platform.

Data collected through the system can be accessed by parents through a connected platform, creating ongoing visibility between appointments and supporting more informed clinical discussions.

Leaning into the Fitness Tracker Model

In many ways, the concept reflects a shift occurring across healthcare. Increasingly, clinicians are moving beyond snapshots collected during appointments and towards continuous data gathered in the real world. Fitness trackers have changed how people think about exercise and sleep. Continuous glucose monitoring has transformed diabetes management. LIPO believes myopia management may be heading in a similar direction.

The company’s Aster 2.0 platform combines what it describes as “professional functional frames with intelligent temples”, creating what it calls a comprehensive ‘Use of Eye Habits’ (UOEH) monitoring system. The goal is to support a closed-loop approach of recording, analysing, intervening, and optimising behaviours associated with myopia management.

Importantly, the technology is not positioned as a replacement for established interventions, such as myopia control spectacle lenses, orthokeratology, atropine, or contact lenses. Instead, it is intended to provide practitioners and families with another layer of information that may help explain why outcomes differ between patients.

Lifestyle and environmental factors are already recognised as important considerations in myopia management. Outdoor activity, visual ergonomics, compliance with prescribed treatments, and near work habits are routinely discussed in practice. The challenge has always been measuring them accurately.

Aster 2.0 seeks to bring objectivity to those discussions.

The latest generation introduces several upgrades, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 4G connectivity options, alongside artificial intelligence-enabled voice interaction capabilities designed to facilitate communication through connected devices.

The frame itself has also evolved, featuring adjustable intelligent temples that can adapt as children grow, with selectable lengths and three adjustment levels.

LIPO said practicality remains central to the design. The frames are constructed from hypoallergenic, skin-friendly, environmentally friendly, and non-toxic materials, while weighing less than 15 grams.

The technology has also featured in several research and clinical evaluation programs, including projects conducted through the Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center, as well as two ongoing multicentre studies involving children with myopia and pre-myopia.1

For practitioners, perhaps the most intriguing aspect of smart eyewear is not the technology itself, but the potential visibility it offers into the everyday realities of children’s visual behaviour.

After all, myopia management doesn’t happen only in consulting rooms. It happens in classrooms, on sports fields, at dining tables, and in bedrooms where homework, reading, gaming, and screen use compete for attention.
