Ophthalmic researchers Professor Laura Downie and Associate Professor Holly Chinnery – who co-lead the FrontTear team – have been shortlisted for the prestigious Eureka prize for innovative use of technology.
Prof Downie, Assoc Prof Chinnery and their team developed the Functional In Vivo Confocal Microscopy (Fun-IVCM), a high-resolution videography device that enables immune cells to be observed moving in real-time within the corneas of living humans.
This technology has captured the first-ever live cell imaging of corneal T cells and provides better accuracy to monitor disease and evaluate treatments.
Prof Downie said the team was “honoured and excited to be finalists for the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes – Innovative Use of Technology Award, which will be announced in September.
