Technology Beyond Limits: Enhancing Independence with Smart Glasses

This informative webinar, hosted by Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA) will explore how smart glasses can support people living with macular disease to maintain their independence, confidence, and connection in everyday life.

Aimed at eye care and allied health professionals, the webinar will provide valuable insights into smart glasses as an emerging low vision aid, helping clinicians and healthcare providers increase their awareness of technologies that may benefit patients living with vision loss.

Speakers

Abigail Jayasuriya, Assistive Technology Specialist and Practice Lead at Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, has lived experience of retinitis pigmentosa and has always found ways to adapt to changes in her vision using technology and other strategies. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge and lived experience with the blind and low vision community.

She will provide an overview of smart glasses, including how they work, their role as a low vision aid, key benefits and limitations, and practical considerations for accessing this technology.

As well, Jean, a Macular Disease Foundation Australia community member, will share her personal experience of using smart glasses. She will discuss how this technology has supported her independence, the impact it has had on her daily life, and what others can expect when considering smart glasses.

Attendees will gain a better understanding of:

  • What smart glasses are and how they work,
  • The real-world experience of using smart glasses for vision impairment,
  • How smart glasses can be integrated into everyday activities as a low vision aid, and
  • The benefits and limitations of smart glass technology.

When: 6:30–7:30pm (AEST), Monday, 31 August 2026.
