Macular Disease Foundation Australia is inviting applications for funding to support research that addresses knowledge gaps in macular and retinal disease.
The 2027 MDFA grant round, which opens on 7 September 2026, aims to accelerate progress toward earlier detection, better treatments and improved outcomes for people living with macular and retinal diseases.
Since 2011, MDFA has invested more than AU$7.2 million in 44 world-leading Australian research projects.
Applications are invited for the following grants:
Macular Disease Foundation Australia Research Grants support groundbreaking projects with the power to transform understanding, prevention, diagnosis or treatment of macular and retinal diseases, providing up to $200,000 over a maximum of three years.
The Grant Family Fund awards provide $50,000 over one year to give early career researchers the opportunity to test daring ideas, pursue creative and potentially transformative ‘blue sky’ research, and generate discoveries that could open new avenues of research in the future.

Completed Expression of Interest applications must be submitted to MDFA via email no later than 11:59pm on Sunday 11 October 2026. All applications will undergo a rigorous assessment and evaluation by MDFA’s Research Grants Committee, comprising leading experts in macular and retinal disease research.
