Macular Disease Foundation Australia has announced four finalists for the Eye Connect Healthcare Award.
More than 100 nominations were received from community members wishing to recognise eye care professionals and clinic teams who have made a profound difference in the lives of people living with macular disease.
2026 Eye Connect Healthcare Award Finalists
Launched by Macular Disease Foundation Australia in partnership with mivsion, the Eye Connect Healthcare Award celebrates eye care professionals whose impact extends well beyond clinical management and treatment.
Describing the response to the award program as “overwhelming”, Dr Kathy Chapman, CEO of Macular Disease Foundation Australia, said the nominations highlighted the extraordinary impact that eye care professionals have on the lives of people living with macular disease.
What stood out was the willingness of eye care professionals to go further by returning calls after hours, providing reassurance during difficult periods, coordinating treatment across multiple providers…
“The nominations highlighted many examples of compassion and human connection. It is a wonderful reminder of the dedication that exists across the eye care community and the lasting impact of quality care during a challenging time in people’s lives,” Dr Chapman said.
Willingness to Care
Through their nominations, community members spoke about professionals who took the time to listen, answer questions, and explain diagnoses in a way that replaced uncertainty with confidence. They spoke of practitioners who remained optimistic and encouraging when a diagnosis felt overwhelming, and who recognised that supporting a patient means caring for the person, not simply managing the condition.
“What stood out was the willingness of eye care professionals to go further by returning calls after hours, providing reassurance during difficult periods, coordinating treatment across multiple providers, and ensuring patients felt informed and supported at every step,” said Dr Chapman.
Community United in Recognition
The experiences shared by patients provide a powerful illustration of the qualities recognised through the award. For example, the nomination for finalist Emily Luu, an orthoptist, highlighted the importance of clear communication and guidance following a diagnosis of macular disease.
Nominator Andrew* reflected on the difference Ms Luu and her team made during a challenging period.
“Receiving a diagnosis of macular disease was a real shock at first. Emily and her team of highly trained professionals tirelessly worked through the issues and clearly explained the options available and how best to proceed.”
Optometrist David Shanahan was recognised for the trust and confidence he builds with patients through his compassionate approach. For Maggie,* it was his willingness to listen and provide ongoing support that set him apart.
“David always takes the time I need and answers my questions with kindness, patience, and empathy. He has a great listening ear and is very supportive,” she said.
Ophthalmologist Dr Stephen Ong was nominated for the exceptional dedication he demonstrates to patients beyond the consulting room.
“I had the occasion to phone Dr Ong on a Saturday afternoon after experiencing disturbing symptoms,” wrote Elizabeth.* “He was in constant contact with me during Saturday night when I am sure he was out to dinner. He also spoke to staff and followed up the next day. That is dedication.”
The Bundaberg Eye Clinic team was recognised for the support that can make a significant difference to patients managing ongoing treatment and maintaining continuity of care while travelling.
“The practical support provided by Bundaberg Eye Clinic gave me the confidence to continue treatment while travelling,” said Heather.* “Their team organised all the paperwork for me to receive my injections at four different clinics around Australia last year, making the process easy and stress-free.”
Nominees’ Humble Response
The finalists were humble in their response to being nominated with Emily Luu remarking, “I am truly honoured and humbled to be nominated for the Eye Connect Healthcare Award. Knowing that this nomination came from a patient makes it especially meaningful. I am grateful for the opportunity to support patients through what can be a challenging journey and I’m proud of the care our team provides.”
Dr Stephen Ong said, “I am only one of many dedicated and compassionate healthcare workers who need to be recognised as they work tirelessly to support and improve the lives of people living with visual impairment across south-west Sydney.”
Care Beyond Treatment
While only four finalists can be recognised this year, the more than 100 nominations received from around the country made one thing clear: exceptional eye care is about much more than treatment.
Again and again, patients emphasised the importance of being listened to, having their questions answered and being encouraged to continue treatment.
The award winner will be announced on 8 October to coincide with World Sight Day 2026.
