A new intraocular lens (IOL) – just been reimbursed via the Prostheses List (15 August) – is described as ‘a step closer to the holy grail of IOLs’.
Developed by Bausch & Lomb (B&L), Crystalens HD is an accommodating IOL for primary implantation in the capsular bag of the eye for the visual correction of aphakia after the removal of the cataractous lens in adult patients with and without presbyopia.
Nicholas Shorter, Commercial Director, Surgical at B&L, predicts that Crystalens HD technology will change the way presbyopia and cataracts are treated.
Crystalens HD utilises the natural focussing ability of the eye by using the eye muscle to flex and accommodate in order to focus on objects that are distant, near and everywhere in between.
B&L has been accrediting surgeons in the use of the technology and feedback has been that the lens is delivering outstanding results.
B&L officially launched Crystalens HD at the Australasian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons conference in Darwin in July and is now rolling-out Crystalens HD to the wider ophthalmic community.
Following the procedure, B&L says most patients have obtained good distance vision and are glasses free for intermediate vision such as using their computer screen or reading a menu in a restaurant.
