A woman aged 101 has undergone successful cataract surgery at the Medical University Clinic of Ophthalmology in Poznan, Poland.
She had suffered from cataracts for several years however her condition had deteriorated recently. The surgery was done using local anesthesia and lasted only minutes.
“The patient is an independent person. The surgery will improve her quality of life. She will probably be able to read the newspaper herself,” said Dr. Andrew Dmitriev, from the University of Medical Sciences in Poznan, who performed the operation.
Meanwhile, personnel aboard the Naval hospital ship USNS Comfort have also performed a cataract removal surgery on a 101-year-old woman in Colombia. The ship was on a five-month deployment to Central and South America for Operation Continuing Promise 2011, a humanitarian aid mission.

Lt. Cmdr. Francine Worthington, the patient administration department head aboard Comfort, who performed Becerra’s initial screening, was reported to say she “was honored to help Becerra throughout the screening process, which led to her undergoing the life-changing surgery and that this surgery is representative of the United States’ commitment to the people of Colombia”.
