ODMA Launches Free Dispensing Handbook

ODMA has launched a Basic Lens Dispensing publication and a practice recommendation sheet to help independent optical dispensers build their business. Finola Carey, Chief Executive Director of ODMA said the tools have been produced in response to the deregulated optical industry.

“Many front-of-house staff aren’t trained optical dispensers or mechanics anymore. They often have very limited knowledge about the basics of the anatomy of the eye, general dispensing, choosing the right frame for the script, etc. So we’ve written this booklet which is a basic grounding,” said Ms. Carey.

The handbook includes the basic anatomy of the eye and more complex issues – such as difficult prescriptions and the new technology behind freeform lenses.

The practice recommendation sheet enables optometrists to list the patient’s eye conditions and provide a series of recommended purchases. “We’re encouraging optometrists to issue this with the prescription after patients have taken their eye test… They’re not going to buy everything recommended in one day but hopefully, they’ll come back and buy over 12 to 18 months… visiting a practice once every two years is not sufficient.”

Practice management sheets are available free of charge, personalised with your practice’s logo and details
