Modstyle Enters a New Era

A new era has dawned for Modstyle, one of the most established optical frame suppliers in the Australian market.

“It was falsely reported in an ophthalmic newspaper just prior to ODMA that Modstyle was closing down. This was not correct at all. Modstyle never closed its doors,” said Chris Jones, the General Manager of Modstyle.

“In reality, what happened was that the previous owners, the Brotherhood of St Laurence, decided to take a new strategic direction within its Social Enterprise Division and divest the company after an extremely fruitful 11 year ownership.

“A number of small and large suitors tendered for the business and in the end the winner was the De Grandi Group who, to some extent was a surprise bidder to the optical market. Modstyle had previously developed a relationship with De Grandi to distribute the Zero rh+ sports sunglasses in cycling stores throughout Australia.”

It is clear that more than ever the independent optical market is looking for new ways of doing business, and new ways to attract customers…

The De Grandi Group is a large distributor of high-end bicycles in Australia and New Zealand including the Pinarello and Wilier cycles used in the Tour De France. They also have a retail business and wholesale sporting equipment. Shane De Grandi, a director of the family owned and run business based in Geelong Victoria since 1929, believed Modstyle would be a good fit for their business portfolio.

“Modstyle is looking toward a changing and dynamic retail optical market as an exciting challenge full of opportunities,” said Mr. Jones.

“It is clear that more than ever the independent optical market is looking for new ways of doing business, and new ways to attract customers. One way which was of immense interest to the new owners is the successful ‘Building Better Lives’ program. This is a joint venture between Modstyle, The Brotherhood of St Laurence and ProVision. This program has had significant cut through with consumers who identify with the benefit of contribution to the social programs of the Brotherhood of St Laurence by selecting a frame from the marked stands.”
