Eyres Eco-Friendly Eye Protection

The news just gets better for those of your customers who are focused on buying environmentally friendly eyewear. In the May edition of mivision, we wrote about the potential marketability of sustainable eyewear, with a focus on fashion frames. Eyres Optics is proving that there is also potential in the market for protective eyewear for sports and the workplace.

Eyres Optics launched its Bioptixx range of frames in 2011 and the 612 WOW model gained recognition at ODMA 2011 when it was nominated for the Green Environment Award.

Frames in the range have been developed to reduce CO2 emissions from environmentally–harmful plastic production without compromising quality, impact rating or style. So dedicated to the ‘green revolution’ is Eyres, that they’ve even developed biodegradable packaging for the Bioptixx range from recycled materials.

The company’s eco-thermoplastic material is ecologically produced using castor plants and energy from biomass. Eyres said the material boasts features that include high fatigue strength, high transparency, resistance to boiling water, resistance to a range of solvents and chemicals, excellent toughness, low density and outstanding weather resistance.

The company says its new manufacturing process will reduce CO2 emissions by 20 per cent in comparison to conventional oil based plastic. However the concept is still being trialed and will only be continued with market support.

Bioptixx is currently available in selected AS/NZS 1067: 2003 (Sunglasses), AS/NZS 1337.1:2010 (OHS Eye Protectors) and AS/NZS 1337.6:2007 (Prescription) models. For more information visit www.eyresoptics.com
