ABC Television Audio Descriptions

For the first time thousands of Australians who are blind or have low vision are getting increased enjoyment from watching television thanks to a trial of audio description on ABC Television that started in August.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column]

Vision Australia, the nation’s leading provider of blindness and low vision services, has welcomed the announcement, by the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy.

“This is a step forward in terms of creating equal access to television for Australians who are blind or have low vision,” said Mr. Michael Simpson, General Manager Accessible Information Solutions, Vision Australia.

Audio description is the narration of visual aspects of movies, live theatre performances, tours and DVDs. It fills in the gaps in the dialogue and helps bring entertainment to life for people who are blind or have low vision.

“Vision Australia hopes this trial will lead to a more inclusive broadcasting culture in Australian television. We applaud the Minister and ABC1 for taking the lead on this,” said Mr Simpson.
