Optometry students at Deakin University have stepped up a gear, holding the first of a series of events designed to provide networking opportunities for students.
The Deakin Optometry Student Society (DOSS) said its first event, a Global Optometry Guest Speaker night, held on campus last month, was attended by about 45 students.
Guest speakers were Mitchell Anjou, an optometrist with a particular interest in public and Indigenous health; Sue Strachan, a Melbourne optom who is actively involved in overseas aid programs; and Ross Both, who spoke on the challenges and benefits of practising in a rural area.
DOSS spokesperson Laura Carson said the event was aimed at inspiring students to pursue different areas of optometry, and would hopefully be held on an annual basis.
DOSS is planning a number of social and educational events for 2013 and has launched a website to promote its activities at www.deakin.edu.au/health/medicine/doss/
