Quiksilver has joined forces with the young Barcelona brand Vuerich B to craft a limited edition of 50 sunglass frames from skateboards ridden by the Quiksilver skateboarding team.
Part of the proceeds from the frame sales will go to Skateistan Cambodia – a Cambodian association that uses skateboarding as a tool for social rehabilitation and youth empowerment.
Colourful graphic designs from the boards were transformed into original patterns, with natural shading achieved by layers of resin.
Carl Zeiss supplied CR39 polarised lenses. Each of the 50 exclusive pairs, which are based on Quiksilver’s Griffin frame, took around five hours to handcraft and is numbered by hand.
They come with a Polaroid of the skateboard that was used to make them and information about the owner/skateboarder.Javier Mendizabal, a professional skateboarder in the Team Quiksilver, was integral to the unique project. Having traveled extensively around the world, Mendizabal said he has seen for himself how much children and teenagers love skateboarding, but also how some of them did not have the opportunity to practice it.Skateistan Cambodia works with kids from diverse backgrounds, with a focus on those who are disadvantaged or working on the streets.
Through regular skateboard lessons and events, the group, which started as an independent, neutral, Afghan NGO, aims to equip boys and girls with the confidence to lead social change and development in their communities.
