From 2014, Sydney TAFE will offer the Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing at its Randwick College.
The relocation from the Ultimo College to the Randwick College is in line with the creation of a new Health Precinct at Randwick.
As well as optical dispensing, courses in dental technology, audiometry and sterilisation will be offered.

“By having all our health related courses in the one location we will be able to offer an even better service to our customers. Exciting new partnerships are being negotiated with health professionals in the community,” he added.
In preparation for the arrival of optical dispensing, Randwick College is in the process of planning and constructing a specialised, modern simulated retail dispensing show room and a dedicated edging facility.
The Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council (CS & HISC) will take into consideration feedback from the Australian Dispensing Opticians Association (ADOA) in relation to a review of the Certificate IV course in Optical Dispensing.
The review is part of a much broader review of all the Health Training Packages with one of the main aims being to improve the assessment aspect of the packages to ensure graduates do in fact attain the required skills.
Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing is part of the Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council (CS&HISC) training package and will be presented by specialist teachers with current teaching qualifications. Industry has been positive about the changes to the new training package.
“Students who are studying the current training package have been fast-tracked to complete their qualification so they will not be disadvantaged by changes in the new package,” Mr Riordan said.
