Australia Commits to Diabetes Study

A multi-disciplinary international consortium of researchers, including Professor Nathan Efron and Dr. Nicola Pritchard from Queensland University of Technology, have been awarded a US$1.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, for a project entitled ‘Multinational Collaborative Evaluation of Corneal Confocal Microscopy as a Surrogate Endpoint for the Identification and Prediction of Diabetic Neuropathy in Type 1 Diabetes’.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column]

The collaboration involves six universities, from Australia, Canada, USA, UK and Qatar, and brings together researchers from the disciplines of optometry, ophthalmology, endocrinology, neurology and histology.

The research project is aimed at validating the assessment of corneal nerves using laser scanning conical microscopy for the assessment of diabetic neuropathy. The study will be conducted on a world-wide cohort of over 500 patients suffering from neuropathic complications of Type 1 diabetes, who have been followed for seven years.
