An educational dinner held at the 2015 RANZCO Congress in Wellington focused on strategies to meet the cataract refractive needs of today’s patients.
Hosted by Alcon, the dinner included presentations by Dr. Ike Ahmed from Canada, Dr. David Manning from NSW’s Hunter region and Dr. Michael Lawless from Sydney.
Opening the meeting, Dr. Ahmed delved into biometry, manual marking and advanced technology diagnostics with a presentation entitled ‘Astigmatic outcomes – the pursuit of excellence’. Dr. David Manning then addressed delegates with a presentation on laser assisted cataract surgery, sharing a number of challenging case studies where LenSx played a significant role in achieving good outcomes for patients.
Dr. Michael Lawless presented on the topic ‘Presbyopia correction without compromise – how close are we?’. His presentation focused on the different trifocal lenses currently available as well as the Acrysof IQ PanOptix, Alcon’s new trifocal IOL. Dr. Lawless described PanOptix as a modified quad-focal design with proprietary ‘Enlighten’ technology, which allows for more light transmission to the retina than other trifocals currently available.
He said the key feature of PanOptix is that it offers patients continuous intermediate to near vision with an intermediate focal point at 60cm, which for many people will be more convenient and practical for various daily tasks than the 80cm working distance offered by other trifocal IOLs.
