Optom Numbers Push Past 5,000

The Optometry Board of Australia has released statistics for registered optometrists as of 31 December 2015.

  • There are now 5,114 registered optometrists in Australia (including four limited and 169 non-practising optometrists). This is an increase of 4.32 per cent from 4,902 on 31 December 2014.
  • 2,281 (46 per cent) of all registered optometrists are endorsed for scheduled medicines.
  • The majority of registered optometrists practice in NSW and Victoria: 1,722 (34 per cent) in NSW and 1,320 (26 per cent) in Victoria, followed by 1,020 in Queensland; 417 in Western Australia; 273 in South Australia; 82 in Tasmania; 75 in ACT and 30 in Northern Territory.
  • 51 per cent (2,631) of registered optometrists are women.
