A new intuitive wearable device with a smart camera will assist people who are blind or visually impaired to read, recognise faces and identify personal items.
OrCam MyEye was co-founded in Israel by computer science researcher Professor Amnon Shashua and the company’s current CEO Ziv Aviram.
The device is a small, light and discreet smart camera which is mounted on the frame of the user’s eyeglasses and connected by a thin cable to a base unit about the size of a glasses case. It is pre-installed with the ability to read almost any printed text – newspapers, books, signs, labels on consumer products and text on a computer screen or smartphone.
New objects and faces can be added to its library by the user. When the user points a finger at the text or item that they want to identify, the device discreetly relays the relevant information to the wearer via a small personal speaker.
The OrCam MyEye is distributed in Australia by Quantum RVL.
