Dr. Gullapalli N. Rao, founder and chair of the L.V.Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad India, is to be inducted to the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) 2017 Ophthalmology Hall of Fame.
Dr. Rao will be honoured at the induction ceremony in Los Angeles on 6 May at the annual meeting of the ASCRS.
The Hall of Fame honours individuals who have “shaped the way modern ophthalmology is practiced”. Those inducted are selected by more than 30,000 peers from around the world.
Speaking of the recognition Dr. Rao said, “I feel overwhelmed and humbled to be part of this group of all-time greats of ophthalmology. I am very grateful to everyone, especially at the LVPEI, for helping me in this journey”.

Dr. Gullapalli Rao founded the L V Prasad Eye Institute in 1987 following a successful career as an academic ophthalmologist in the USA. His areas of specialisation include diseases of the cornea, eye banking and corneal transplantation, community eye health, eye care policy and planning.
Dr. Rao has published nearly 300 papers in national and international journals, contributed several book chapters, and served on the Editorial Boards of several journals. He has been honoured with several international and national awards, was formerly the Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and is currently the Chair of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis.
