The Australian College of Optometry (ACO) is expanding its suite of postgraduate level courses with the launch of the Certificate in Public Health Optometry (ACO-CPHO). As a major provider of public optometry services, the ACO is well placed to deliver this course. Delivered online, it will enable optometrists in Australia and New Zealand to undertake higher level study in this important, emerging area of focus in optometry.
ACO-CHPO consists of two modules, the first focusing on public health optometry and the second on leadership in this field. The first module will examine the fundamentals of public health including epidemiology, biostatistics, health systems, health promotion, health literacy, and cultural competency. The second module will cover important areas of public health leadership including the future of work, diversity and inclusion, health management and clinical leadership, networking and partnerships, and advocacy and communication.
The six month certificate course features self-paced learning through online lectures, reading materials, and online discussion forums. Assessments will include a project-based activity designed to encourage participants to look at public health issues in a novel way.
The Certificate of Public Health Optometry will join a diverse range of offerings from the ACO in 2019, alongside the Certificate in Advanced Contact Lenses, Advanced Certificate in Glaucoma, Advanced Certificate in Children’s Vision, and the Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics.
The course commencement date is 29 May 2019.
