Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE from Carl Zeiss Meditec) was first presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in 2006. Nearly 14 years later Prof Walter Sekundo (Phillips University of Marburg), Prof Marcus Blum (Helios Klinikum Erfurt) and colleagues have published their ten-year results of SMILE for the treatment of myopia and myopic astigmatism.
In summary, 56 of the original 91 eyes of the original treatment group were re-examined ten years after the original refractive surgery procedure was performed. The results show that ten years post-operatively, there was no significant change from the six-month results, leading the authors to conclude that SMILE was an effective, stable and safe procedure for the treatment of myopia and myopia astigmatism.
