A continued professional development (CPD) video presentation on Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) Optics and its application to presbyopia and myopia control is available for eye health professionals to view at mieducation.com.
The presentation, titled Extended Depth of Focus Optics: The Philosophy and Technology was delivered as a webinar in June and attended by over 600 optometrists. Presented by Professor Arthur Ho, Chief Scientist Innovation Officer at Brien Holden Vision Institute, the presentation discusses EDOF optical technologies, how they differ from standard multifocal optics and the rationale for their application to presbyopia and myopia control.
A total of 2M CPD points in Australia and 1.5G in New Zealand are available to those who view the video presentation and complete the accompanying assessment questions.
WHY EDOF FOR CLS
Traditional soft multifocal contact lenses are designed to image distance, intermediate and near light on the retina at the same time.
Many optical principles and designs have been used for presbyopic correction including aspheric optics, concentric optics and several alternating annular zones.
While EDOF optics have been successfully applied to IOL designs for some time to elongate depth of focus, until recently, the same technology had not been applied to contact lenses.
Now soft contact lenses with EDOF optics are available for commercial use, providing presbyopic patients with clearer vision over distance, intermediate and near. Additionally, this innovative technology has been shown to be an effective treatment for myopia control.
