Optical Assistant Essentials, a free online learning platform for newly employed optical assistants, has seen a massive take-up since its launch in August 2020.
A collaborative education platform developed by the Australasian College of Optical Dispensing (ACOD) and mivision, Optical Assistant Essentials currently offers over 20 short, concise video tutorials, with assessment quizzes.
At the time of going to print, over 300 optical assistants had enrolled and completed courses.
James Gibbins, a co-founder and director at ACOD, said the courses are purpose designed so that untrained optical assistants can commence watching from day one of their employment in a practice.
“But as well as new, untrained optical assistants taking up the opportunity, we’re also finding employed optical dispensers and practice staff, who are currently undertaking Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing, are dipping into the modules as a way of refreshing their knowledge,” he said.
Todd Tai, Managing Director of mivision said, “This impressive take-up up demonstrates staff thirst for knowledge and practice owner recognition that lens dispensing knowledge is essential to the success of any optical practice.”
Optical Assistant Essentials’ free online video tutorials can be accessed at www.OpticalAE.com. Optometrists can use their mieducation.com log in details to access modules.
Each module takes between five to 15 minutes to complete and can be watched at leisure at home or during a quiet moment in practice.
