With swept source optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology, the Zeiss IOLMaster 700 offers unique features and functions to achieve fewer refractive surprises. An important feature that contributes to the accuracy of the IOLMaster 700 is its unique fixation check, which is a foveal scan that occurs as part of every capture. The resulting image is important because it informs the operator about the quality of the patient’s fixation – if the foveal pit can be seen, fixation is demonstrated, thus reducing the risk of erroneous measurements caused by undetected poor fixation.
A side benefit of the fixation check scan is that it has the capacity to demonstrate macular abnormalities, such as intraretinal fluid, which can be verified by a subsequent retinal optical coherence tomography scan prior to cataract surgery. In doing so, the fixation check not only increases biometric accuracy, it also improves workflow and has the potential to reveal previously undetected macular pathology.
