AM Eyewear has been inundated with enquiries about its limited edition frame named Ava, in the colour mellow yellow (SKU 72-MY-GN, pictured).
Actor Johnny Depp purchased the frame when he was filming in Australia and was spotted wearing it on multiple occasions during his recent court case.
While feeling the pressure to re-release this limited edition frame, AM Eyewear founder Simon (Kumar) Ponnusamy has confirmed the ‘Johnny Depp frame’ will not be reproduced as it would defeat the purpose of it being a limited edition.
However, he said, having received so many requests he plans to reproduce the colour-way in a new style, with proceeds from its sales going to a domestic violence charity.
Mr Ponnusamy said his 18-year veteran brand has “always been a brand for the eyewear aficionado who looks for something not in the mainstream”.
The company releases a number of limited edition colour ways each year to accompany the main collection.
“People in fashion circles treat our limited edition colours like sneaker collectors treat limited edition sneakers. We have people emailing us to find out the day they’ll go on sale and they collect them,” he explained.

Johnny Depp wearing AM Eyewear Limited Edition ‘AVA’ during his recent court case
In the past week, after the buzz of Johnny Depp wearing Ava, which was released eight years ago, Mr Ponnusamy said demand for the style skyrocketed with hundreds of Instagram and email enquiries about the frame and demands for a re-release. Te Ava in Yellow Mellowalso appeared on eBay being sold by a customer for AU$2,000.
This is not the first time an AM Eyewear frame has demanded such a high price, with the Zeiss x AM Eyewear collaboration which was released four years ago and limited to 400 units frequently appearing online for much higher than its original €400 price tag.
