Lens dispensing, edging and fitting will be taught to all first and second-year University of Technology of Sydney (UTS) orthoptic students during a series of intense training sessions later this month.
Provided by the Australasian College of Optical Dispensing (ACOD), the half day sessions will combine teaching and hands-on experience.
This wonderful collaboration of ophthalmic colleagues and university academics will deliver multiple benefits to the wider optical industry
James Gibbins, Director of ACOD, said the program will be hugely beneficial to students.
“We have done this before with the UTS Orthoptics, but never on a scale like this – this will be a very exciting series where groups of 30 students will be supported in their learning by ACOD and members from their UTS faculty.
“During this half day bonanza of dispensing, edging and fitting training, students will get to edge and fit lenses to match their own prescription, or that of a family member if they prefer.
“This wonderful collaboration of ophthalmic colleagues and university academics will deliver multiple benefits to the wider optical industry. Students of Orthoptics will get to see and experience how real specs are made, what goes into making them, and how to do a final check for quality control. They will get to take home special mementos of their learning experience in the form of industry standard spectacles.”
The training sessions will take place in North Sydney on 30 and 31 August, 2022.
