Professor Nathan Efron has been elected as President of the International Society for Contact Lens Research (ISCLR) at its twenty-first symposium held in Porto, Portugal, in August 2022.
The ISCLR, which formed in 1978 and held its first meeting in London in 1980, is a group comprised of global experts from all aspect of contact lens research, including academics, clinicians and colleagues from the contact lens industry. The Society is supported by a corporate advisory board, comprised of representatives of the world’s leading contact lens companies.

The Society meets formally at a biennial scientific symposium, to which invitations are extended to expert keynote speakers from related and emerging fields, as well as the best and brightest PhD students in the contact lens field.
The symposium is a closed meeting, which rotates around the world to provide stimulating environments for detailed discussions on the key challenges in the contact lens field. The twenty-second symposium will take place in ‘The Americas’ (precise location to be confirmed) in August 2024.
Professor Efron, who is also Editor of the journal Clinical and Experimental Optometry and Emeritus Professor at the Queensland University of Technology, said “I am delighted to take on the challenge of leading and further developing the ISCLR as a leading international forum for advancing the contact lens field. The next few years are important for the contact lens field as academics, scientists and the industry emerge from the dark cloud of COVID, which has hampered university research and industry innovation over the past two and a half years.”
