Philanthropist Dr John Knight AM, who was instrumental in developing a cataract program to overcome long wait lists for surgery under the public health system, has passed away. The cataract program (MediAid) also provided specialist surgical training for registrars in ophthalmology that would otherwise have been unavailable.
Known fondly to many as the media personality Dr James Wright, Dr Knight was 94 at his passing on Sunday 27 November, 2022.
Dr John Knight has done so much to help so many people during his life – he can be very proud of what he achieved
Ophthalmologist Associate Professor Geoffrey Painter from Gordon Eye Surgery, who was integral to expanding the MediAid program, acknowledged Dr Knight’s contribution to the community.
“Dr John Knight has done so much to help so many people during his life – he can be very proud of what he achieved.
“His support of the registrar training programme over the last seven years has seen at least five new ophthalmologists trained, who would not have been trained without his financial support.
“He was a great philanthropist and his foundation, now run by his son, plans to continue its support of registrar training.”
A memorial service will be at the Wahroonga Seventh Day Adventist Church, Fox Valley Rd, Wahroonga, on Wed, 21 December, at 10.30 am.
The service will be live streamed. Further details will be provided.
