Eye Health in Australia Day Honours

Mivision congratulates all members of the community who were recognised in the Australia Day 2024 Honours List for their contribution to health, and particularly the following people who have made a significant contribution to eye health and to people with low vision or blindness. 

Emeritus Professor Christian Joseph Lueck, ACT  

Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division   

Prof Lueck was recognised for his significant service to neurology and neuro-ophthalmology through medical research and clinical practice.  A neurologist at the Canberra Hospital and an Associate Professor at the Australian National University Medical School (ANUMS), he is recognised nationally as an enthusiastic and influential teacher of neurology and neuro-ophthalmology at a post-graduate level. Prof Leuck co-authored a textbook chapter on neurology which is used by medical students around the world.

Gregory Johnson, Victoria  

Member of the Order of Australia (AM) In the General Division 

Mr Johnson was recognised for his significant service to community health through diabetes governance, reform, and education. 

Mr Johnson was the Chief Executive Officer of Diabetes Australia from 2009-2021 during which time he was integral to the establishment, and was a Director of the KeepSight Program. 

Michael John Aitken, Victoria  

Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division    

Mr Aitken was recognised for service to optometry.  He has been an honorary archivist in the Cyril Kett Museum and Archive at the Australian College of Optometry since 1971 and was a Clinical Teacher during the 1960 and 1970s. He was an optometrist in private practice in Coburg, Victoria from 1960-1993, and a lecturer at University of Melbourne from 1960 to 1970.     

Sandra Elizabeth Knight, Victoria 

Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division   

Ms Knight was recognised for service to people who are blind or have low vision.  She was president of the Melbourne Branch of Blind Citizens Australia from1998- to 2000; Treasurer from1996to 1998; and Secretary from 1994 to 1996. She has worked with Vision Australia and volunteered with Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria, and has received numerous awards for participation in a variety of Blind Sports.
