Innovation and Impact: Dr Kurt Moody on Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day

Dr Kurt Moody

Dr Kurt Moody, a veteran in contact lens innovation and Director of Professional Education for Johnson and Johnson Vision (J&J) in North America, recently shared his insights on the company’s latest offering, Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day and Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal contact lenses.

With over four decades of experience and eleven US and global patents in the field, Dr Moody’s enthusiasm for the new product was palpable. And, having launched the new lens to practitioners in Australia and New Zealand, he said local interest and excitement was “actually even higher than what we had in the US”.

Dr Moody, who has been instrumental in developing several groundbreaking contact lens technologies, including the pupil optimised design for multifocal lenses, expressed deep satisfaction in seeing theoretical concepts materialise into tangible benefits for patients.

“When we have the opportunity to take a concept on paper and put it into a contact lens and then look at it on a patient, it’s awe-inspiring,” he shared. “And then nothing is better than when that patient comes back to you after a few days or a week and says, ‘You’ve changed my life with this lens’. We hear that so often. It really galvanises the decision I made when I decided to become an optometrist.”

Mimicking the Human Eye

Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day incorporates several new technologies that Dr Moody and his team have developed, always with the goal of mimicking the human eye system as closely as possible.

Acknowledging long-term debates surrounding the ability of blue light filters to protect ocular health Dr Moody stated, “there’s been absolutely no human data” to support this. He believes incorrect conclusions have been drawn because animal model studies have shown blue light filters can protect the macula of mammals. “Although the retinal anatomy is very, very similar between mammals and humans, we can’t make that one-to-one connection,” he cautioned.

“Johnson and Johnson is very conservative and truly, if we don’t have the data, we’re not going to promote it,” Dr Moody explained, highlighting the company’s commitment to evidence-based innovations.

Proactive Fitting Key

For optometrists considering prescribing Acuvue Oasys Max 1-DAY Multifocal contact lenses, Dr Moody emphasised three key points: the new bar set for comfort and vision, the importance of educating patients about the new technologies, and the efficiency of fitting this new multifocal design.

“Invest a little time to learn how to fit this lens, (Johnson and Johnson has produced a video in which Dr Moody discusses the fitting guidelines, that will be available on JNJVisionPro in August), and then just go ahead and delve into it,” he advised, highlighting the potential for improved patient retention and referrals.

As presbyopia begins to affect Gen Y, Dr Moody sees a significant opportunity for practitioners to expand their contact lens patient base. “If you do proactive fitting, you’re getting those people early in their presbyopic journey, you’re doing them a huge favour, and you have probably just locked that patient in for years and years to come,” he noted.
