The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has welcomed the appointment of Professor Jenny May AM as Australia’s incoming National Rural Health Commissioner.
AMA President Professor Steve Robson said Prof May was well qualified and experienced to promote better access to healthcare for rural and regional Australians.
“We know people living in regional, rural and remote areas experience health challenges including access to the workforce,” he said. “Prof May brings more than 35 years as a rural GP in rural, regional, and remote Australia as well as overseas’ experience.”
He said Prof May has a deep commitment to rural communities, with extensive experience in education, training, and policy development.
Prof Robson also paid tribute to the outgoing National Rural Health Commissioner Adjunct Professor Ruth Stewart, describing her as a “real champion for change” who put “the needs of rural Australians front and centre in health policy development”.
