Jan Coetzee and Michael Jackson
George and Matilda Eyecare has acquired two well-established practices at Main Beach and Sanctuary Cove in Queensland, which have been owned and operated by Michael Jackson, an optometrist with 25 years in the industry.
Mr Jackson has a fascinating professional history, initially pursuing a PhD in science before choosing a career in optometry where he could work more directly with people and develop his business skills. He has owned three practices, starting with Ballina before opening his practice in Sanctuary Cove 10 years ago and Main Beach four years later.
Known for providing “good old-fashioned service” combined with premium frames and lenses, the practices pride themselves on solving the unique vision needs of their patients. “There’s so much misinformation out there, especially around frame selection and lens design. We take the time to ensure our patients leave with sound advice and solutions that truly work for them,” Mr Jackson said.
They allow us to maintain our independent spirit while managing the increasing regulatory and financial pressures on practices
Mr Jackson said joining George and Matilda Eyecare was a strategic decision driven by the changing landscape of optometry. “There’s a shift in the industry where younger optometrists are seeking more flexibility, particularly with part-time work and managing larger financial commitments. I realised that selling to a corporate model was inevitable to achieve my personal goals, and George and Matilda was the perfect fit,” he explained. “They allow us to maintain our independent spirit while managing the increasing regulatory and financial pressures on practices. Having a larger entity to support us makes it more sustainable in the long term.”
Mr Jackson described his experience working with the George and Matilda Eyecare team as positive, and said the transition was smooth and well-handled. “After 12 months of discussions, we worked through all areas of concern. While there were points of contention, the team’s professionalism made the process straightforward, and we were able to find solutions that worked for everyone.”
For other optometrists considering their next steps, he advised, “Life is too short to wait. The profession is changing, and it’s important to consider your options before the market shifts further. George and Matilda offer a great opportunity to step back or step out while ensuring your practice continues to thrive.”
This new partnership is evidence of George and Matilda Eyecare’s continued commitment to expanding its network while upholding the high standards of care and service that patients across Australia have come to expect. The group now supports over 100 communities.
