Seeway Network For Low Vision Patients

Australia’s first comprehensive network of support for individuals with low vision has been launched by Guide Dogs NSW/ACT.

SeeWay, is a new subsidiary brand for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT that aims to transform how eye care professionals offer ongoing support to people experiencing permanent changes in vision due to conditions like genetic disorders, macular degeneration, glaucoma, or diabetes – conditions that often leave people feeling unsure of where to turn for practical resources and emotional support.

Describing the platform as a “game-changer for people and professionals alike”, Dale Cleaver, CEO of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT said SeeWay and its pilot program, known as Navigate Your Journey, “provides support to the currently unserved market of those with developing moderate low vision”.

For eye care professionals, the platform provides a seamless solution to support clients… without placing additional time demands on their practices

SeeWay serves as a one-stop resource centre for people who are in earlier stages of vision loss, before needing functional one-to-one support. Many of these people do not qualify for formal disability funding, though they are in no less need of assistance in navigating daily life. The aim is to bridge this gap, offering a pathway for individuals to access the guidance and support they need earlier.

In designing the platform, Mr Cleaver said the SeeWay team had “collaborated with peak bodies to offer complementary services and avoid service duplication, and would refer patients on to other service providers, based on client need.

“We understand there is some confusion in navigating referrals in low vision services, and SeeWay is designed to simplify this process for eye care professionals, and for the patient and their families. It’s a centralised hub that offers support for all eye conditions, rather than being disease specific.

“Whether its information on how to make their home more accessible, how to make the most of their remaining vision, details on subsidies and entitlements, digital device training, or referrals within SeeWay, or on to other services, we can help,” Mr Cleaver concluded.

Personalised Content

Navigate Your Journey, SeeWay’s free, online support network, helps individuals gain an understanding of their lifestyle and goals – delivering personalised content and connecting them with practical support services such as daily living assistance, transportation options, financial entitlements, and more.

For eye care professionals, the platform provides a seamless solution to support clients in living a full and independent life and to navigate their journey with confidence – without placing additional time demands on their practices.

By creating connections, building confidence, and extending support beyond clinical consultations, SeeWay helps individuals manage vision changes with greater independence. This holistic approach empowers people and enhances the support they already receive from their care providers.

SeeWay officially launched at the Vision 2020 Australia Parliamentary Friends Group for Eye Health and Vision Care event in late October – an event hosted to highlight the critical importance of eye health and vision care across the country – where it received an extremely positive reception from professionals within the industry.
