Driving Sustainability in Australian Optics

The independent Australian-owned optical laboratory, CR Labs, is setting new environmental benchmarks for the industry through innovative sustainability initiatives, while maintaining its commitment to world-class lens manufacturing.

At the heart of the company’s environmental strategy is an advanced water recycling system that has dramatically reduced water consumption in lens production.

According to Adam Fletcher, Chief Executive Officer of CR Labs, the company’s “state-of-the-art recycling system ensures 100% of production water is treated and reused, saving over 500,000 litres annually”.

“For an industry that relies heavily on water resources, this represents a significant step forward in environmental stewardship,” he observed.

The company has also introduced Australia’s first eco-friendly lens, the ECO6, manufactured using plant-derived materials. Mr Fletcher said this innovation contributed to a 15% reduction in CR Lab’s greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining high optical performance standards.

“The ECO6 lens demonstrates that environmental responsibility and premium quality can go hand in hand,” he noted. “We’re showing the industry that sustainable solutions don’t require compromising on performance.”

The manufacturer’s commitment to sustainability extends throughout its operations, with all packaging now made from 100% recycled materials. Internal operations have also been optimised for environmental efficiency, including the use of recycled paper and reusable materials for print materials.

CR Labs is also driving digital transformation in the industry, encouraging practices to adopt online ordering systems. “By transitioning from paper-based to digital ordering, we’re significantly reducing our collective environmental impact, while at the same time, streamlining and speeding up ordering processes for practices,” Mr Fletcher said.

Within an industry that is increasingly focussed on the environment, Mr Fletcher said he is proud that CR Labs is “leading the way in sustainable vision solutions”.

“Sustainability isn’t just a goal for us – it’s part of who we are. We believe that the future of eye care depends on more than just technological innovation; it also requires a commitment to protecting the environment we practise in. By adopting environmentally friendly practices, we are not only helping shape the future of our industry but also contributing to a more sustainable future for Australians.”
