With the prevalence of myopia projected to reach 50% by 2050, the Australian College of Optometry (ACO) is exploring the emerging epidemic from a public health perspective as part of its upcoming Certificate of Public Health and Leadership in Eye Care. This module is part of a comprehensive curriculum designed to enable eye health professionals to lead with an expanded understanding of health promotion, policy, research, and care for marginalised populations in local and global contexts.
Tim Fricke, ACO Director of Research and Education, will explore the global epidemiology of myopia, its long-term public health implications, and evidence-based strategies for prevention and control, drawing on his extensive research work. In his lecture ‘Myopia – Business Opportunity, Modern Public Health Epidemic, or Pandemic?’, Mr Fricke provides valuable context for understanding the scale, consequences and control of myopia in a global health framework. Introduced to the course in 2024, his lecture was a standout, with 100% of surveyed graduates agreeing it was relevant to improving their public health skills.
Tim Fricke… will explore the global epidemiology of myopia, its long-term public health implications, and evidence-based strategies for prevention and control
Mr Fricke brings decades of experience in clinical practice, research, education and international development. Following his work with the Brien Holden Vision Institute team, estimating that half of the global population would have myopia by 2050, new research continues to expand our understanding of global patterns in refractive error and ocular accommodation.
The Certificate of Public Health and Leadership in Eye Care curriculum spans core topics such as epidemiology, biostatistics, health promotion and literacy, global eye health, Indigenous eye care, and the delivery of services to disadvantaged communities. Participants can tailor their learning by selecting either a leadership or outreach stream.
