Communities worldwide are being invited to participate in a unique artistic initiative this August, designed to highlight the crucial work of eye surgeons across the globe.
The Australian Society of Ophthalmologists (ASO) has unveiled its inaugural international colouring competition as part of its annual World Ophthalmologist Day campaign, aiming to showcase the profession through creative expression.
The competition welcomes participants of all ages, including a dedicated adult category for those who use colouring as a form of stress relief and mindfulness practice.

ASO Chief Executive Officer Katrina Ronne explained the initiative’s broader purpose: “Art is often described as bringing people together, which is exactly our aim this year. We have created an international movement with World Ophthalmologist Day and want to keep the conversation and voices growing — especially with our friends and peers abroad.”

The ASO first established its World Ophthalmologist Day campaign in 2023, with specific objectives in mind. “We sought to raise the profile of Australian ophthalmologists, increase community awareness about their preeminent role in eye health, and encourage recognition and appreciation for the profession through the hashtag and campaign concept, ‘Thank an Ophthalmologist’,” Ms Ronne said.
She noted the campaign’s growing impact: “It was once a lesser-known date on the calendar but the work we have been doing in recent years is contributing to a positive shift, where ophthalmologists – eye surgeons – are ‘seen’ for the vital work they do.”
The competition operates through the ASO website, with participants encouraged to share their entries across social media platforms and other community channels. Winners will be announced by Monday, 25th August 2025, with successful entrants receiving gift packs delivered internationally.
