Minum Barreng Activities to Conclude

Minum Barreng Indigenous Eye Health Unit at The University of Melbourne will conclude its activities by the end of 2026.

In a message, Unit Head Mitchell Anjou said the unit is transitioning its programs, activities, and resources to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and leadership.

“This planned transition is being undertaken consistent with the advice and support of our Advisory Board, key informants and staff, and with the endorsement of the University,” Mr Anjou said.

Minum Barreng was established in The University of Melbourne by Professor Hugh Taylor AC in 2008, with the goal of eventually becoming redundant having contributed to sector improvement and development in a manner that would allow ongoing elements of its work to be delivered in the future by others.

Mr Anjou said that goal has now been realised “with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership continuing to drive improvements in eye health and care, supported by partners across the sector”.

Minum Barreng will continue throughout 2026, maintaining and populating its website and social media channels with news and updates on transition activities and the conclusion of the group.

Mr Anjou said enquiries, discussion and questions regarding the conclusion of Minum Barreng and the transition of its work can be made by emailing him directly at manjou@unimelb.edu.au or on (AUS) 0433 673 452.
