Ortho-k Pioneers Award Launched

A global award has been announced to recognise pioneers in orthokeratology. Marking the 70-year anniversary since Dr Robert Morrison’s discovery of orthokeratology in 1956, the Ortho-k Pioneers Award was launched by the world’s largest dedicated community of orthokeratologists, as part of The Orthkars | Golden Eyeball Awards.

Deven Lakhani, orthokeratologist and co-founder of orthokeratologist.org, said the award “is a fitting way to not only celebrate the original trailblazers and those who boldly followed in their footsteps, but to showcase the current pioneers who sit on the leading edge of ortho-k innovation and are writing the next chapter of this incredible story we’re proud to be part of”.

For those interested in the global history of orthokeratology, orthokeratologist.org has produced a 10-part series, authored by co-founder Jaimin Patel, covering the key early industry pioneers.

“A global award has been announced to recognise pioneers in orthokeratology”

The series unearths largely untold stories of optometrists who made their own orthokeratology lenses in their homes in the 1970s, and tested them on their own patients. The series tells stories of the first optometrists to use topography, the early adopters, and the early rigid gas permeable materials manufacturer – now one of the largest lens material companies in the world – who made his first materials in his garden shed!
