Rohto Dry Aid Now Available in Australia

Rohto eyedrop packaging

Rohto, the world’s leading eye care and eye drop brand,¹ has launched Rohto Dry Aid Intensive Dry Eye Relief in Australia following its mid-2024 debut in New Zealand.

The product was launched at an event held alongside the Optometry Clinical Conference in Melbourne on Sunday, 17 August.

At the event, Professor Fiona Stapleton presented, for the first time in Australia, key insights from the recently released Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society’s third Dry Eye Workshop Report (TFOS DEWS III) guidelines.2

The guidelines emphasise personalised treatment approaches for dry eye disease, recognising overlapping mechanisms including lipid deficiency and neurosensory discomfort.

Rohto Dry Aid represents a new treatment option that aligns with the primary drivers identified in the TFOS DEWS III Guidelines

Three-Way Mechanism

Rohto Dry Aid Intensive Dry Eye Relief is engineered to address more evaporative forms of dry eye disease as well as tear supplementation.1 Backed by more than 100 years of pharmaceutical and ocular research, it is designed to meet the increasing demand for effective relief among patients whose symptoms are exacerbated by heavy screen use.

The eye drop features a unique three way mechanism:

  • Lipid layer stabilisation: Polyoxyethylene castor oil and sesame oil support meibomian gland lipids, reducing evaporation.
  • Cooling comfort: Menthol activates corneal neurosensory TRPM8 ion channels, offering fast-acting soothing comfort and tear stimulation.
  • Long-lasting hydration: Povidone and polyoxyl stearate reinforce tear film structure, providing up to 12 hours of protection with Tearshield Technology.

This multi-targeted action makes positions Rohto Dry Aid Intensive Dry Eye Relief within the TFOS DEWS III modern management paradigm.

Clinical Support

In a head-to-head trial, Rohto Dry Aid outperformed sodium hyaluronate drops in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction, improving tear break up time, ocular surface staining, and patient-reported symptoms.3

Now Available Optometry Only

Rohto Dry Aid is now accessible in Australia, offering optometrists and ophthalmologists an evidence-backed, over-the-counter solution available to purchase exclusively in optometry practices for patients with evaporative or mixed-mechanism dry eye.

Speaking at the launch event in Melbourne, optometrist Dr Margaret Lam said “For clinicians, Rohto Dry Aid represents a new treatment option that aligns with the primary drivers identified in the TFOS DEWS III Guidelines. By targeting overlapping mechanisms and addressing the root causes of dry eye, it offers a more effective approach than many existing therapies. For patients, it redefines what an eye drop can deliver – combining comfort with long-lasting soothing relief.”

Miho Nishiyama, Rohto’s Global Research and Development Group Manager who travelled from Japan to attend the event, said the company was “delighted to introduce these eye drops to Australia, providing much-needed relief for patients living with dry eye”.
