Innovation Grants Target Retinal Care

3 scientist racing each other. one crossing the finish line. This represents the Ophtha Innovation Challenge for 2025 relateing to the innovation grant targeting retinal care.

Roche’s Ophthalmology Network – a global initiative – has launched the Ophtha Innovation Challenge for 2025, seeking innovative solutions to address critical information gaps in managing chronic retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular oedema (DMO).

The initiative recognises that these conditions require ongoing, long-term treatment, creating significant knowledge gaps across the care continuum. Patients often struggle with self-management, whilst caregivers lack guidance on providing optimal support for loved ones. Meanwhile, physicians face challenges accessing centralised treatment data, resulting in fragmented patient care journeys.

Participants are invited to submit proposals that aim to bridge these information gaps and enhance patient care through improved disease management strategies. Submissions must include a PDF proposal with an optional two-minute video presentation.

Roche will initially shortlist entries before a 10-member expert steering committee evaluates proposals against defined criteria. Successful applicants will receive institutional grants, with funding levels varying according to project scope—from pilot studies and proof-of-concept initiatives through to translational research programmes. Notably, grants must be allocated to institutions or associations rather than individuals.

Eligible participants include ophthalmologists and clinicians, academic and research institutions, patient advocacy groups, healthcare technology and digital health developers, and industry partners including AI and software developers.

Submissions close on 30th September 2025, with funding decisions confirmed by the end of December 2025.

Further information and submission guidelines are available at ophthalmology-network.org/home.html
