Lucentis (ranibizumab) is an established anti-VEGF therapy for the treatment of diabetic eye disease, including diabetic macular oedema (DMO) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).
By inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), Lucentis targets the underlying drivers of pathological neovascularisation and vascular leakage. Administered via intravitreal injection, it delivers localised treatment directly to the retina.
Since October last year, Lucentis has been Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)-reimbursed in Australia for PDR, providing an evidence based alternative to panretinal photocoagulation.
