Expanding Migraine Care: A New Avulux Lens Portfolio

Avulux

Avulux has expanded its migraine lens portfolio with two purpose-built options designed to support people experiencing migraine-related light sensitivity across a wider range of visual environments.

Migraine is a debilitating neurological condition estimated to affect 14.7% of the global population, with women more commonly affected than men.1,2 Symptoms vary but can include sensitivity to light, sound, and smell, as well as nausea and vomiting.1

Light sensitivity, or photophobia, can be particularly disruptive. In a migraine study involving more than 6,000 people with migraine, more than 49% identified light sensitivity as their most bothersome symptom.2 Up to 80% of people with migraine experience photophobia during a migraine.3

While darkly tinted lenses have traditionally been used to manage photophobia, prolonged use may increase dark adaptation, potentially making subsequent exposure to light feel more intense and uncomfortable.4

Avulux was developed as a non-pharmacological approach to migraine-related light sensitivity. Its lens technology selectively filters specific wavelengths of light associated with activation of melanopsin, a photopigment involved in pathways associated with light sensitivity and headache pain.

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial reported a clinically significant reduction in migraine headache pain intensity and light sensitivity among participants using Avulux lenses.6

In a 2024 survey of Avulux wearers, 96% reported decreased light sensitivity during and between migraine attacks,  94% reported a soothing sensation in their eyes during an attack, and 93% said they were able to participate more in everyday activities they might otherwise have avoided.7

The expanded portfolio, available through CR Labs, introduces Avulux Adapt and Avulux Atlas, extending the technology into changing-light and outdoor environments. Avulux Adapt combines photochromatic technology with Avulux’s patented selective filtration technology.

Designed to adapt as light conditions change while maintaining targeted filtration, the lens provides an option for wearers moving between different visual environments.

Avulux Atlas is designed specifically for outdoor use, combining Avulux filtration technology with polarisation.

It reduces harsh reflected light from surfaces including water, roads, snow, and glass, with the aim of improving visual comfort and clarity in bright outdoor conditions.
