Allergan Releases Ganfort Eye Drops

Allergan Ganfort eye drops are an antiglaucoma preparation and treatment for raised pressure in the eye. 1

Ganfort eye drops contain two active ingredients, bimatoprost and timolol maleate, that work in different ways to produce a combined effect in decreasing elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) greater than either medicine produces on its own. 1

Bimatoprost is a synthetic compound that mimics the natural prostaglandins in the eye to reduce pressure. Prostaglandins increase the drainage of the aqueous humour out of the eyeball, thereby reducing pressure.1

Timolol is a type of medicine called a beta-blocker. Blocking the beta receptors in the eye reduces the amount of aqueous humour that is produced. Timolol therefore reduces the inflow of aqueous humour into the eyeball and so decreases the pressure within the eye in a different way. 1

Allergan states that “the eye drops are administered into the affected eye(s) once per day”.1
