OPSM, Australia’s largest optometry retailer, has announced the availability of Digital Retinal Scan technology across their entire Australian network of over 300 stores. This significant technology investment represents the next phase for OPSM.
Commenting on the investment in technology, Grant Fisher, National Eyecare Director for OPSM, said: “Put simply, most Australians are walking around blind to the fact that eye health and general overall well being are intrinsically linked. By introducing the Digital Retinal Scanners in every OPSM store across the country, we will automatically raise the standard of care and revolutionise eye health and the role it plays in general well being forever.”
Grant continues: “Digital Retinal Scans can aid optometrists in offering a greater scope of care to their patients. Firstly, the technology allows a more in-depth assessment of eye health. Taking less than five minutes, the Digital Retinal Scan photographs the inside of the eye, allowing the optometrist to thoroughly study images of the retina, optic nerve and blood vessels.
“In addition, observing the health of these parts of the eye can aid in the early detection and management of serious conditions that transcend sight. With a Digital Retinal Scanner an optometrist has a potentially fast, easy and painless means of picking up early warning signs of many conditions, from heart attack and stroke to hepatitis. Keeping a record of subsequent scans allows for a comparison of the retina, optic nerve and blood vessels. Any subtle changes in appearance are captured and allow for the early detection of diseases, allowing for better monitoring of eye health over time.”

The announcement comes as the group launches the next phase of the ‘OPSM Loves Eyes’ campaign, which first aired in September 2010. Television commercials hit our screens on Sunday 10 July, supported by complementary new visuals across OPSM stores in Australia.
