Silhouette in Space

The space shuttle Atlantis has launched into outer space for what is its final mission.

Astronauts will be using onboard Titan Minimal Art by Silhouette, which will be the eyewears 35th trip into space. With superior optics and at only 1.8 grams its the lightest eyewear in the world making it a perfect choice for space missions. For more than ten years now, Titan Minimal Art from the Austrian eyewear manufacturer Silhouette has been flying with NASA astronauts into outer space and accompanying them in their daily work in weightlessness.

For twelve days, the experienced four-person crew led by Commander Chris Ferguson will stay in space at the ISS Space Station.

We are, of course, very happy to see that our eyewear meets the high technical standards of NASA. We are also, of course, excited about this last space shuttle flight

Astronauts and eyewear
70% of astronauts use eyewear every day. In outer space, that number even reaches 90%

When Silhouette’s Titan Minimal Art was first introduced in 1999, it became a sensation because of its minimalistic design and its screwless and rimless construction. It was no wonder that NASA engineers and ophthalmologists took notice of this eyewear. For the discerning experts at NASA, not only was low weight important, but also innovative technologies such as screwless and hingeless design. The amazing elasticity and robustness of Silhouette’s titanium allows the frame to form-fit perfectly to any head shape and size, this, even under helmets and that feature is very much welcome by astronauts.

Whilst this may be the last NASA flight for the time being, it is not the end of Silhouette’s time in outer space. Silhouette is planning to provide future space tourists with nearly weightless eyewear.

Arnold and Klaus Schmied, chairmen and co-owners of Silhouette International stated: “We are, of course, very happy to see that our eyewear meets the high technical standards of NASA. We are also, of course, excited about this last space shuttle flight.”

Titan Minimal Art, like all Silhouette rimless frames, is made in Austria by renowned manufacturer Silhouette International. Its manufacturing process is at over 80% hand made with pride.
