Optometrists who have missed the November deadline to renew their registration risk being unable to practise, unless they lodge their application by the end of the year.
The Optometry Board of Australia (OBA) says optometrists were required to renew their registration by 30 November 2011.
Optometrists who have not done so are still able to renew their registration online until 31 December this year, but will have to pay a late fee on top of the normal registration fee.
Miss the 31 December deadline, and optometrists will not be able to practise optometry in Australia until a new application is approved. The OBA says neither it, nor the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency has any discretion on this.
