Conventional OCT visualises retinal structural changes but is not able to visualise changes in microvasculature. With OCT-angiography we can now visualise functional ocular blood flow and identify changes in the retinal and choroidal microvascular with unprecedented detail.
Conventional Fluorescein Angiography (FA) and Indocyanine Green Angiography (ICG) require dye injection for two-dimensional imaging of the retina and choroid. Non-invasive Angio-OCT generates high resolution vascular three-dimensional imaging using the intrinsic motion of blood cells within vessels as contrast medium, without dye injection nor dilation.
Fluoro angiography has a duration time with circulatory filling, while Angio-OCT delivers repeatable sequential images. OCT-angiography images do not show dye pooling seen with FA but visualisation of deeper capillaries are therefore not obstructed.
Optovue recently released AngioVue for their Avanti XR wide-field OCT model. With this optional upgrade OCT-angiography images can easily be acquired in seconds for 3D visualisation of retinal and choroidal microvasculature to evaluate both structural and functional abnormalities.
The Optovue range is distributed exclusively by BOC Instruments in Australia.
