A new Academy of Advanced Ophthalmic Optics has been launched to develop optometrists’ and dispensers’ knowledge of optics and lens design.
Established by optometrist Thao Hannaford and physicist/lens designer Grant Hannaford, the Academy will deliver a course comprising online and practical seminars. Online tasks and tests will be used for assessment and a variety of ongoing mentoring packages will be available.
Co-founder Thao Hannaford said the Academy aims to deliver education that reaches beyond the scope of TAFE, other registered training organisations and undergraduate optometry and vision science programmes in Australia.
“Effective optometric practitioners recognise the patient experience does not end at the consulting room door. Developing a strong understanding of the application of ophthalmic dispensing is an indispensable part of a successful practice, and ensures accurate and appropriate realisation of the optometric consultation,” said Ms. Hannaford.

Mr. Hannaford said prior foundation studies in optics would be beneficial to those undertaking the course. “While the Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing currently offered by the optical education system is an ideal launch pad for our education offering, it is not essential.”
